This Wood Mouse was found at Emsworth, Hampshire in 1948. The number is thought to refer to its order number. It was prepared by Rowland Ward Ltd, a company more known for specialising in big game hunting trophies, large cabinets of birds and furniture made from animal parts, including elephant foot umbrella stands and zebra foot inkwells.
The company was formed in the late 19th century at a time when exotic birds and mammals were sent to the UK in their thousands to meet the growing demand for fashion accessories and displaying taxidermy in the home and museums.
